Preston Knight is Something Special
Preston Knight is another Synthwave artist I have heard about, in passing, over the years. But he just released two new singles last week that are straight eargasms.
Preston Knight’s voice transcends time, bringing you back to the 80s. He pulls you into a neon-lit smoke filled memory; an era of fast Italian super cars, big hair styles, and rolled up sleeves on sports coats, even if you didn’t live through it.
Without need for comparison, his voice should be heard. But, for those of you who like to know what you’re getting into, Knight’s voice reminds me of The Weekend mixed with Tevin Campbell.
The two tracks that I want to discuss are Together In Time & Find A Keeper.
Preston Knight: Together in Time
Together In Time is a straight up horizontal dancing track.
It’s slow, hypnotizing synth is the primer. Then Preston Knight’s haunting, harmonic pitch is layered on top and immediately sedates you.
He has a very seductive voice which plays into the 80s sound aesthetic. It’s so smooth it makes you feel like you need a cigarette afterwards.
The lyrics drive in passionately, making the heart demand to stay in the relationship, even though your head is screaming, “Walk away!” As long as “we move on together in time,” anything is possible.
Moving along together, the relationship survives, provided you’re both willing to risk anything to save it.
He uses imagery of the relationship being a motorcycle riding the wind. A metaphor for the constant force that a couple struggles against, fighting to survive together at all costs :
And the bike it don’t get scared
Baby it rides the wind
Baby tonight we don’t fear death
We fight to win
We move on together in time
Never knowing where to die
We move on to get it right
To stay alive
This stupid plan well it might do
Give it the gas and the fire too
I keep a bottle in the side boot
And hit the miles that it likes to do
“Never knowing where to die” means they don’t know when the relationship might end but they will continue to ride it out by giving it the gas and passion (fire), and putting on the miles that it likes to do until it dies. Whenever that is, is up to them.
Preston Knight: Find a Keeper
With Find A Keeper Preston continues to express those haunting vocals, sedating and seducing you.
However, in this poppy track, the message is: if you find a keeper, treat her right.
This song uses the “One that Got Away” trope. It’ll definitely get you thinking about an ex; whether your regrets are leaving or let them walk away.
Lyrics aren’t found available for this song yet
Beyond the Latest Singles
Preston Knight’s other songs I would recommend would be: Acrylic and Human.
Overall, I believe he’s is a great artist within the Synthwave genre.
His production is top tier. His haunting voice echoes through your mind and will recover memories you forgot you had.
Preston Knight should be embraced and lauded for his talent.
